Product Definition

Define product, manufacturer, site, declared/functional unit, reference flow and intended application.

Goal & Scope

Set the study goal, audience, system boundary, life-cycle stages, assumptions, allocation and cut-off rules.

Life Cycle Inventory

Collect activity data for materials, energy, fuels, transport, packaging, water, waste, use and end-of-life where applicable.

Evidence & Data Quality

Attach invoices, meter records, production records, supplier data, laboratory results and source references; assess temporal, geographical and technological representativeness.

Impact Calculation

Apply documented emission factors, characterization factors and calculation rules; preserve the full calculation trail.

QA/QC & Review

Run completeness, consistency, unit, boundary, duplicate-data and plausibility checks before technical review.

Verification / Assurance

Where the selected programme requires it, submit the study and declaration to the competent independent reviewer/verifier or programme operator.

Report & Publication

Generate the technical report, indicator tables, evidence package and final product profile; publication follows the applicable programme rules.

LCA / ISO 14040 & ISO 14044

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

LCA is the analytical foundation used to quantify environmental aspects and potential impacts across a product life cycle. The study must be transparent about its goal, scope, inventory, impact assessment and interpretation.

Technical workflow

Define goal, intended audience and decision context.
Select functional unit / declared unit and reference flow.
Set system boundary: cradle-to-gate, cradle-to-grave or another justified boundary.
Build the Life Cycle Inventory (LCI).
Apply appropriate LCIA methods and characterization factors.
Interpret results, test completeness and consistency, and document limitations.
Prepare the LCA report with assumptions, sources, allocation and data-quality information.

Core evidence

Bill of materials and production quantities.
Energy and fuel consumption by process.
Supplier-specific or secondary datasets with source/version.
Transport modes, distances and load assumptions.
Packaging, waste and treatment routes.
Use-phase and end-of-life assumptions where relevant.
Allocation and cut-off rationale.

Reference framework: ISO 14040 and ISO 14044. Specific product rules, databases and LCIA methods must be selected according to the study goal, product category and programme requirements.

EPD / ISO 14025

Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)

An EPD is a standardized environmental declaration based on life-cycle information and applicable Product Category Rules (PCR). It is not simply a marketing certificate; the published declaration follows the requirements of the relevant programme operator and verification process.

EPD development pathway

Identify the product category and applicable PCR.
Define the declared/functional unit and reporting period.
Perform the underlying LCA according to the applicable rules.
Compile environmental indicators and supporting information.
Prepare the EPD document in the required programme format.
Complete independent verification through the applicable programme.
Publish/register the EPD according to programme rules.

Reference framework: ISO 14025 provides principles for Type III environmental declarations. Product-specific PCR and the selected EPD programme determine the detailed reporting and verification requirements. For construction products, EN 15804 may apply where required by the relevant programme/PCR.

WATER FOOTPRINT / ISO 14046

Water Footprint Assessment

Water Footprint Assessment evaluates water-related aspects and potential impacts associated with a product or system. It requires more than a single water-consumption number: the inventory, geography, water source, discharge and impact pathway must be documented according to the study objective.

Assessment workflow

Define goal, scope, product and functional unit.
Map water inputs, uses, consumption and discharges across the boundary.
Record location, source and relevant water-quality information.
Compile the water inventory and data-quality assessment.
Assess relevant water-related impacts using an appropriate method.
Interpret results and document assumptions, limitations and hotspots.
Produce the water-footprint assessment report.

Minimum data architecture

Water withdrawal by source and process.
Water consumption and return flows.
Process and cooling water where applicable.
Geographical location of water use.
Discharge volume and relevant quality parameters.
Supplier/product inputs with significant water dependency.
Evidence and measurement methodology.

Reference framework: ISO 14046 establishes principles and requirements for water footprint assessment consistent with life-cycle thinking.

PCF / ISO 14067

Product Carbon Footprint (PCF)

A Product Carbon Footprint quantifies greenhouse-gas emissions attributable to a product system within a defined boundary and functional/declared unit, using life-cycle principles and expressed as CO₂-equivalent according to the selected methodology.

PCF calculation workflow

Define product, functional unit and intended use of results.
Select the system boundary and relevant life-cycle stages.
Collect activity data for materials, energy, fuel, transport, packaging and other relevant processes.
Select documented emission factors and record their source/version.
Calculate each source: activity data × emission factor, with required unit conversions.
Apply allocation, biogenic-carbon and other applicable methodological rules.
Aggregate results into kg CO₂e per functional/declared unit.
Perform QA/QC, document uncertainty and prepare the PCF report.
